It's so amazing the things children remember....About a month ago, MaYah was exposed to some sort of virus which caused a little coughing and some conjestion. She was only about a month old, so I had limited home remedies that I could think of. Thankfully, our oldest daughter, Mariah, rememebered the garlic treatment from one of my studies.... If you have a young child, you can crush a few cloves of garlic and put them in the baby's socks for gradual absorption in the blood stream. Mariah took initiative to help her little sister and make her a "garlic foot." After a few treatments, the wonderful benefits of garlic healed our precious sweetpea. YA GOTTA LOVE GARLIC! Here's another post about garlic:http://www.joyfuljunction.com/1/post/2011/02/the-wonder-of-garlic.html Lately, Marlon has been dealing with a reaction to the poision oak that he encountered during our visit to my mom's house. He has had severe swelling and itching from his contact with the bushes he was removing near the creek. The irritation has been so uncomfortable that he's often gotten up in the middle of the night to wash with hot water and apply various ointments to help soothe and heal. Finally, he was about to go to a doctor for a prescription, but instead he decided to give natural remedies one more chance....Tea Tree Oil! He bought a 16oz bottle for less than it would cost for a doctor visit and Im so happy to share that after just a few days, he's on his path to healing. HALLELUYAH! Here's more info: http://www.homeremediesweb.com/tea_tree_oil_health_benefits.php "And the earth brought forth grass, the plant that yields see according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And Elohim saw that it was good." Bereshith (Genesis) 1:12 I previously posted a link to ordering the 55gallon water barrels ( http://www.joyfuljunction.com/1/post/2011/06/think-ahead.html ). Although, the barrels on this site don't fit my budget, I did notice these at the Super Giant/Beast (Wal-Mart) for about 1/2 the price of that site. Also, it's worth mentioning that a friend recently told me that she buys these barrels locally from some type of manufacturer for about $35. If this isn't an option, then perhaps the Wal-Mart version is an alternative worth considering (about $50). Finally, I've been told not to store these directly on concrete floors due to some sort of reaction to the plastic that may contaminate the water supply....I haven't researched the specifics, but if you know the reason why, please post a comment.
I'm still in preparation mode and came across this website for those with bigger budgets & less time to plan: http://www.shelfreliance.com/ For those of us who have already started some preparations, this site is super helpful for ideas. SANITATION: This is one item on my list of future purchases....A bucket seat cover for a little over $10. (Some may prefer to just dig a hole in the backyard and squat) This reminds me of an idea a friend in Tennessee shared with me regarding "Travelling with Young Children." She suggested putting a potty seat in the vehicle and line the bottom with a plastic grocery bag and a sanitary napkin (or a cloth diaper would work). Make sure you have extra hand sanitizer, wipes and/or toliet paper. Then, if you have a youngster with a need to "expel" and you're in a remote travelling area OR you don't want to unload everyone to go inside to the potentially unsanitary gas station restroom........simply pull over, let them sit privately (perhaps use a sheet to cover for modesty purposes.) Then tie up the plastic bag (the pad will absorb the fluids), drive to a gas station or grocery store and discretely dump it in the trash. Viola! A stress free solution to accomodating a natural bodily function. HYDRATION- Another aspect to our planning has been water storage. I haven't been able to purchase the water barrels on my list, so we're using an idea from a local friend. Directions:
I also got some tips from the FEMA website and learned that I shouldn't use containers with juice or milk due to potential bacterial growth.
Here's the link for more tips: http://www.fema.gov/plan/prepare/water.shtm#1 My friend down south shared this simple Granola recipe (below). You can "mix and match" your wet and dry ingredients depending on your taste, budget or whats in your pantry. For our most recent batch, I used oats, dry milk, ground almonds and coconut mixed with honey and cranberries (YUMMY) The recipe is from the More with Less Cookbook: Basic Dry Cereal Formula
Notice: The clear pan cooked slower and required less stirring than the cookie sheet. I did put the lighter granola back in the oven to brown a bit more. Also, this recipe can be done in a slow cooker. Here's an OLD link of us making another granola recipe in a slow cooker: Earlier this week, I was making a Spinach Alfredo dish with extra garlic (thanks Achoti R for this delicous recipe.) As i was preparing the garlic, my 5 year old mentioned, "I love garlic," then she asked if she could eat some. Of course I'd give her this immune boosting healthly treat. How many preschoolers like to eat slightly cooked garlic?
After I baked the garlic in olive oil for about 10 minutes, 3 of her siblings joined it to enjoy my little garlic treats. For those who may think this is slightly bizzare, consider reading up on the health benefits of this wonderful herb. Here's a link to get you started (it's an oldie, but goodie): http://www.nogreaterjoy.org/fileadmin/template/Calendar/2006/Herbal_Lessons/Garlic2.pdf A few months ago we ate dinner with the K family and I noticed that Momma M had a nice pitcher of water with freshly squeezed lemon as a beverage. I thought, 'that's a clever idea' and a great alternative to juice or my favorite, soda. Thankfully, I don't buy kool-aid any more. Now, I'm trying to be disciplined and reserve soda for special occasions only (like Shabbat, Festivals, Date Night, etc.) Again, I emphasize the word "trying" because I admit that I'm not quite ready to go cold turkey off the soda, but I'm sure "trying" to only drink it in moderation. With that said, I invested in a decorative water jug to fill our purified water, a little lemon, then chill in the fridge to make it even more refreshing on a warm day. Another option that I've seen is to add some cucumber to your water. I'm not quite sure all the benefits to this, but it's worth looking into.
And of course, I thought of how my grandmother would make "sun tea" by setting out a glass gallon jar in her backyard all afternoon with a few tea bags in it....Good Times! "For Elohim has not given us a spirit of cowardice (fear), but of power and of love and of self-control." 2 Timotiyos (Timothy) 1:7 (The Scriptures Version) I was doing some research on making more bulk food storage preparations, and I began to think about a video I posted previously. It was a special on the History Channel that provides some real-life possibilities in a time of emergency. Considering the natural disasters recently, it is wise to be diligent in our prayers as we make provisions for the "What If's". If you're interested in viewing this 9 part series, you can click below (note, I'm only posting part 1 and the other parts can be found on YouTube) Keep in mind that Viewer Discretion is advised and the disclaimer on the video is:"This program is a theoretical account of the worst case scenario for a global disaster....This is not a real emergency" |
